Settle in for Part Two of our Cabo trip as I am going to squeeze the remainder into one post.
One afternoon we took a water taxi out to Land's End to see the famous Arco where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez and then spend some time on Lover's Beach and Divorce Beach. Lover's Beach is the calm side on the Sea of Cortez and you can cross over into Divorce Beach and see the high tides from the Pacific Ocean. Signs are posted all over that you cannot swim on the Pacific Side and you wouldn't want to try either, the waves were quite huge. We spent most of our time on that part of the beach, as just fun to watch the strong Pacific.
I'm not sure why we are wearing the life jackets here really because nobody offered us one on the ride back, but a cute picture nonetheless. We were told prior to getting on the boat that this would have been a 40 min tour, but it really ended up being 15 minutes and then we were dropped off at the beach. I suppose you can't expect much from a beach salesman who calls himself "Rice and Beans". Ha!
We took some "selfies" with the IPad on Divorce Beach
Chris climbed up the rocks a bit with his bare feet

At the recommendation of our bosses, we had lobster on the beach one night at a place called The Office. It was one of the first establishments in Cabo prior to the city getting more developed. It is a tourist trap but you need to get to at least one of those on your vacation it seems. They had a waiter dressed up as a doctor, a clown and an indian tribesman. They snapped a picture of us with the tribesman, which they later tried to get us to purchase. I wasn't quite sure of the costume theme there? On our way out, the mariachi band was just coming to our table to sing, but thankfully we escaped that. But, as I knew it would, the food came through and we were impressed. However, it was dark so my pictures of the lobster, aren't really worth sharing.
Even though it is a bit blurry, I do like the picture below and all the activity in the background of the place.
All snuggled up with the blankets they provide as it got chilly on the beach at night!
On Valentine's Day we took the 15 minute walk from our resort to the downtown and the marina. We did some light shopping and then decided to hop on a 3 hour boat tour that was going to Chilleno Bay. For $35 it was all you can drink, included a taco bar and then snorkeling in Chilleno Bay. We didn't have our swimsuits on, but that was ok since we weren't really interested in snorkeling anyway. I've done it before and mostly found it boring and the last thing I wanted to do was get back on the boat, soaking wet for an hour ride back in the wind. We got the most sun during the boat ride and it was fun to watch some of the idiots that decided to do shots within the first minute of the boat ride. We've learned from prior vacations that drinking in the sun all day isn't all that fun. One girl was down for the count 30 minutes later and then passed out for the entire remaining time. Classic.
The best part of the trip was the fact that we got to see whales. I guess February is prime-time for whale watching in Cabo and I had debated spending money on a whale watching tour, but didn't want to spend an entire day doing a long excursion, especially since you weren't guaranteed to see anything. We saw some whales from our resort on our first morning which was satisfying enough for me. Then it got even better as we saw some close-up on the boat ride. I didn't bother to grab my camera at all as I just wanted to be able to enjoy the moment and not try to fumble with a camera and miss it. We saw a couple groups of whales; Mama whales with their babies. Mostly they would just bob up to the top of the water for air, sometimes they would skip over the top of the water, where their tail flips up and back down and then one time the Mama whale jumped in the air and slapped back on the water. So amazing!!
On Valentine's night, we had reservations at Don Manuel's in the Capella Pedregal resort. Again this place came recommended by Ali and Jason. The resort is rated #1 on Trip Advisor and wowza, it is first-class. I am grateful to Ali & Jason for the recs as I would have never thought that you could go into other resorts to eat.
We started with drinks by the firepit. We both ordered one of their signature drinks called Snake 13, made with mescal tequila, ginger ale, cucumber & pineapple. Mescal tequila has a real smoky flavor, it was definitely different, but I finished mine (and some of Chris').
We split the corn risotto as an appetizer. For his entree, Chris had the braised pork with plantains and black beans (not pictured).
I ordered the blackened amberjack that was served over a slaw & pistachio salad and green mole. It was a very meaty piece of fish. Great dish, even better presentation.
On our last night we went to the beach party at the sister hotel next to our resort. We had the buffet dinner (nothing to write home about), listened to the live band, danced to one song - Eric Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight" and overall just people watched.
It was a great vacation and we were happy to avoid a week of winter. A week later my tan is already peeling and fading, but we'll always have the memories, right?!

Sounds like it was a wonderful trip...makes me want to go there...
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures of the two of you having time alone in Cabo. You are fortunate people to relax at such places! Good for you as you both work hard and deserve every moment! I love the views of the ocean and sea and always love the interruption of the cuisine, too!
ReplyDeleteHow beautiful. I had no idea Cabo was so scenic. What cute pictures of you and Chris!
